COLOR: Red and Yellow and Green, oh my!

Lets explore the color wheel by creating a colorific concoction; a batch of rainbow "stew"!

What is your favorite color: a primary color or a secondary color? Blue, yellow, and red are primary colors. Orange, purple, and green are secondary colors. Secondary colors are made when you mix primary colors together. The reason that we can see colors is because we have special cells in the retina of our eyes called "cones." If we didn't have cone cells, we would only see black, white, and shades of gray. At night, our cone cells don't work very well and we can't see colors.

Materials:

• 1/3 cup sugar

• 1 cup corn starch

• 4 cups water

• food Coloring

Instructions:

1. In a sauce pan, mix together the ingredients above.

2. Stir constantly and heat it until the mixture begins to thicken.

3. Remove from heat and let cool.

4. Divided the mixture into three bowls. Add a different color to each bowl. You can even mix your colors and experiment with the things we learned above!

5. Put approximately three tablespoons of each color into a ziploc bag.

6. Knead the baggie to mix colors just enough to look like a rainbow.

7. Lay the bag down on a hard surface and press to flatten and shape it. Try hanging it in your window to see how the colors are illuminated!
