A Message from the Board President
To the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine Board, Members and Friends,
Over the past year we have experienced fantastic progress. We have purchased an acre of land on Thompson’s Point and have begun our transition to relocate. Granted, we have a long way to go - from fundraising to construction, from exhibit installation to theatre seats before we cut the ribbon on our new home, but the ball is rolling.
The land at Thompson’s Point was previously used as an industrial site, and we are in the process of repurposing the land for our new home. The marine clay that sits below the lot has been compressed with over 100 dump trucks worth of crushed stone and sand. This pre-loading of the building site is our start. It’s a big, expensive pile of dirt, but it’s our big, expensive pile of dirt! And in the not-so-distant future, with the soils below us packed and compressed, we will start to build our foundation. This is the foundation of our new home, the foundation for the future of our kids in Maine and beyond.
Our 30,000 sq. ft. purpose-built Museum & Theatre will not only increase the number of visiting families but will also expand the age range of the children we serve. We will have beautiful architectural designs along with state of the art, professionally designed exhibits. An entire floor will be dedicated to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and will include a 1770 sq. ft. live aquatic exhibit showcasing different ecosystems found in Maine. In addition, we will offer a dedicated 100-seat theatre designed specifically for young actors and family audiences. We will also have increased space for our most beloved exhibits such as Our Town, the Fire Truck and the Toddler Park.
This new location is going to bring a generational change to our organization, but we will remain true to our vision of inspiring discovery and imagination through exploration and play.
