The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is home to the longest-running children’s theatre in the nation.

Havings journeyed from parks to flatbed trucks, storefronts, and temporary locations across Portland since 1923, the Children’s Theatre of Maine merged with the Children’s Museum of Maine in 2008. Organizational leaders dreamed of one day finding a permanent home for the museum and theatre that allowed both to flourish and weave together narrative, play, performance, and learning all under one roof. The new Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine at Thompson’s Point is the realization of that dream and the product of 100 years and countless individual’s hard work to retain a precious community resource for current and future generations.

Our Road Map

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine has created a roadmap, moving towards a goal of accessibility and belonging. We not only want every child to have access to the performing arts at the Museum & Theatre, we want every child to walk into Maddy’s Theatre and think, “I belong here!” The theatre’s core programming, partnerships, and collaborations are designed to engage young audience members, inspire imagination, spur collective action, and encourage community building.

What does that look like? Theatre for Young Audiences, Intergenerational Plays, and Theatre Ensembles are the keystone programs in Maddy’s Theatre.

• The Theatre for Young Audiences plays are a chance to see professional actors creating theatre for children and their families. These plays are available for touring throughout all of Maine. 

• Intergenerational Plays feature actors of all ages onstage together and a unique mentorship program in which actors of all ages can learn from each other.

• Youth Theatre Ensembles place process over product and are a by kids, for kids theatre education program. The emphasis is on creating an ensemble of actors that work together and determine what story they want to tell.

Maddy’s Theatre will host diverse performing artists who mirror our community. Theatre programming strives to reflect the diversity of the state of Maine through staff, actors, design team, participants, audience, and story.

Equipped with a teaching tech booth, a soundproof viewing gallery, its own dedicated lobby, and a green room and workshop backstage, Maddy’s Theatre is a state-of-the-art facility designed with young family audiences in mind.
