About Our Building

A Nationally Recognized Destination for Play, Learning, and Creativity

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine was recently named one of the top eight children’s museums in the country by Condé Nast Traveler—recognized for our dynamic, sensory-rich spaces that engage, entertain, and educate.

“Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine… lauded for its award-winning theatrical performances, imaginative exhibits, and innovative cultural programming.” – Condé Nast Traveler

Our new home on Thompson’s Point in Portland is a 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility and the most visited museum in Maine. It houses the nation’s oldest continuously operating children’s theatre, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. Every corner of the Museum & Theatre is designed to reflect Maine’s environment, culture, and creativity—while making room for all families to play, learn, and grow together.

Our New Home on Thompson’s Point

A Vision Realized

Founded in 1923, the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine had become a vital part of Portland’s Arts District. But with growing attendance and demand for programming, it was clear: we needed a bigger, more adaptable space.

In 2016, we launched a successful $15 million capital campaign. A year later, we purchased a 1.12-acre property along the Fore River on Thompson’s Point. Despite a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we proudly opened our doors to the public on June 24, 2021.

Designed with Purpose

Location

We’re located on Thompson’s Point, near the Portland International Jetport and the Downeaster train station—making us a vibrant, accessible hub for over 200,000 annual visitors.

Architecture

Designed by Bruner/Cott Architects and built by Zachau Construction, the building prioritizes natural light, open spaces, and strong connections to Maine’s culture, environment, and communities. The entire space is built with universal design principles to ensure accessibility for all.
