JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Visitor Services Assistant

POSITION PURPOSE

The primary responsibility of the Visitor Services Assistant is ensuring a high-quality visitor experience at the front desk and assisting with museum & theatre operations. This position reports to the Visitor Services Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Operate Welcome Desk register in a high-volume, noisy environment

  • Ensure all visitors feel welcome- fostering a sense of belonging & joy

  • Represent Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine to all visitors in a lively, play-based environment

  • Respond to visitor questions and provide appropriate information about the Museum & Theatre and the surrounding area

  • Perform cash and credit transactions for admissions, memberships, event ticketing, etc.

  • Open and close register & front desk

  • Promote and take reservations for performances and workshops

  • Answer the main phone line and respond to the front desk email account

  • Maintain cleanliness of lobby and front desk areas, including management of lost & found items

  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities as assigned

  • Promote and sell memberships to families and organizations

  • Staff after-hours events as needed (typically Thursday or Friday nights scheduled 3-4 weeks in advance)

  • Perform other duties as identified by supervisor

  • Participate in annual self-evaluation & review

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Incredible customer service skills

  • Enjoy working with children and families

  • Comfortable working in a high noise environment, that includes an indoor playground

  • Ability to switch between tasks fluidly

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Point of Sale systems is a plus

  • Two years of retail or in a retail adjacent environment with experience in sales and merchandising a plus

  • The availability to work on weekends (typically 8:30-4:30 range) including occasional weekend evenings, until 8:00 pm.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE

  • Listening to visitors and responding to them is required regularly.

  • Computer use is required frequently.

  • Maintaining sight of the entrance to CMTM regularly requires visual acuity and the ability to react based on what is observed.

  • Role occasionally includes moving quickly to ensure children do not leave the premise unattended.

  • Motor dexterity required for locking front doors, stamping hands, typing, and exchanging and counting currency.

  • Many tasks require prolonged periods of sitting or standing during regular duties.

  • Reaching overhead is required regularly for store restocking.

  • Lifting up to 15 lbs is required frequently for store restocking.

  • Climbing ladders up to 6’’ high is required occasionally.

  • Bending, crawling, kneeling, and crouching required occasionally.

SCHEDULE

Sunday 11:00-4:00 & Saturday 8:30-4:30

Additional hours may become available during the summer season

LOCATION

On-site and in-person (250 Thompson's Point Rd, Portland, Maine 04102)

COMPENSATION

$18.81 per hour

CMTM has an equitable system of pay that offers a base rate based on position, longevity pay increases over time. This system is designed for equity and as such we do not have the ability to negotiate the compensation listed above.
