Maine children's museum sells building in prep for big move
A Maine children's museum has sold its downtown Portland building to help clear the way for a move into a new space.
The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine sold the building to the Portland Museum of Art for $2.1 million. The sale means the museum can move into a more modern space outside downtown at Thompson's Point next year or in 2021.

The Children's Museum of Maine is moving from downtown Portland to Thompson's Point.
The museum director says the new facility will have double the space for exhibits, which will include water and nature exploration, physics and STEM related activities and a large community exhibit.

The sale moves the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine closer to its capital campaign goal, Executive Director Julie Butcher Pezzino told Mainebiz.
With the Thompson’s Point construction, the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is executing its strategic plan to serve twice as many children and families and to expand programming to a more diverse community. Proceeds from the sale of 142 Free St. are contributing to the construction of the organization’s new building and its exhibits; a capital campaign for the balance needed will be announced in the coming months.

On Tuesday, October 15th, we sold our building to the Portland Museum of Art, allowing us to make progress on our upcoming move to Thompson’s Point, and giving the PMA room to expand! We will stay where we are (with the PMA as our new landlords) for up to 20 months while we build our new home.
