Exhibit Feature Friday: Meet Our Neighbors: The Korean Language School

Exhibit Feature Friday

At the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM), we use the word exhibit to describe the interactive experiences, spaces, and displays spread across three floors and immediately outside the facility at 250 Thompson’s Point Road. CMTM is home to over 15 exhibits designed to encourage experiential learning through open-ended play.

Our team at CMTM decided to give each exhibit the spotlight it deserves and is dedicating Fridays to highlighting a new exhibit, diving a little deeper into the WHY and HOW behind each playful space and experience.

EXHIBIT: Meet Our Neighbors: The Korean Language School

LOCATION: 2nd Floor

Meet Our Neighbors, made possible by a generous gift from Cross Insurance, is a rotating exhibit highlighting stories of community members who call Maine home. The gallery fosters communication and empathy-building while engaging families in conversations about diversity and difference.

The current Meet Our Neighbors exhibit features the Korean Language School!

The Korean Language School of Maine

The Korean Language School of Maine has been meeting in the Portland area since 1981 and today meets weekly on Washington Avenue. It provides meaningful opportunities for the Portland community to learn about Korean language and culture. CMTM and the Korean Language School have been community partners for over a decade.

Learning through Language

In the Meet Our Neighbors: The Korean Language School exhibit, visitors learn about Korean culture through Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. The exhibit allows guests to experience Korean cultural traditions like language, dress, food, and entertainment.

A primary feature of the exhibit is a writing board, where guests can use water and brushes to write their names in Hangeul. There is also an iPad where visitors can hear Hangeul spoken and listen to interviews with students and teachers at the Korean Language school, a display case featuring children’s hanboks (special occasion clothing), and a Korean Language School Student Art Show.

CMTM is deeply grateful to the co-curators of Meet our Neighbors: The Korean Language School, Yeongrae An, Youngok Shin, Ip Boon Park, and Hyeri Yoon.

감사합니다 (gam-sa-ham-nida! Thank you!)
