We're Hiring: Designers for the 2026-2027 Theatre Season
The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM) seeks designers for our 2027 Maddy’s Theatre Mainstage Season, running from June 2026-May 2027.
The Maddy’s Theatre Mainstage Season will consist of four productions, taking place in July/August, December, February, and April.
The Maddy’s Theatre team is looking for:
Costume Designers
Using the directors’ artistic vision and feedback as a guide, the Costume Designer will determine what actors are wearing. They will create sketches of each character and their costumes, will keep a detailed list of what each character is wearing in each scene, and will determine how quick changes work. The designer is responsible for tracking all receipts and staying within the provided budget. The designer will attend weekly production meetings, check in meetings as needed, a designer run thru, and tech week.
Prop Designers
Using the directors’ artistic vision and feedback as a guide and working within the style of the Scenic Designer, the Prop Designer is responsible for building and sourcing all props for the production. They will create and maintain a props list based on notes out of rehearsal, will provide rehearsal props as needed, and will work with the stage manager to organize backstage prop tables. The designer is responsible for teaching all receipts and staying within the provided budget. The designer will attend weekly production meetings, check in meetings as needed, a designer run thru, and tech week.
Puppet Designer
Using the directors’ artistic vision and feedback as a guide, the Puppet Designer is responsible for building and sourcing all puppets for the production. They will create and maintain a puppet list based on notes out of rehearsal, will provide rehearsal puppets as needed, and will work to train actors on how to use puppets. The designer is responsible for teaching all receipts and staying within the provided budget. The designer will attend weekly production meetings, check in meetings as needed, a designer run thru, and tech week.
Sound Designer
Using the directors’ artistic vision and feedback as a guide, the Sound Designer is responsible for creating and sourcing all music and sound effects for the show. They will maintain a list of sound cues, provide samples of cues to try out in rehearsals, and will create the QLab file needed to run the show, including pre and post show music as needed. The Sound Designer will make sure all music and sound effects are properly licensed and credited as needed. The designer is responsible for teaching all receipts and staying within the provided budget. The designer will attend weekly production meetings, check in meetings as needed, a designer run thru, and tech week.
Light Designer
Using the director’s artistic vision and feedback as a guide, the Light Designer is responsible for creating and programming all lighting effects for the show. They will maintain a list of light cues, source rentals as needed, and are responsible for the hang and focus of instruments. The designer will work with the Production Manager to reserve time in the space for hang, focus, and cueing. The designer is responsible for tracking all receipts and staying within the provided budget. The Light Designer will have all cues programmed and saved in the light board by the start of the first tech rehearsal, with the understanding that cues will be adjusted as discoveries are made throughout tech week.
Schedule
Production Meetings take place weekly over Zoom. The exact date and time will be determined by the groups availability.
A designer run is worked into each production schedule, usually on a Wednesday from 6-8:30.
Tech week is scheduled for Monday-Wednesday (Monday-Thursday for intergenerational productions) from 6-10 PM.
Strike takes place immediately following the final performance.
While specific production schedules vary based on the needs of the production, most have a six-week rehearsal period not including tech. Performances generally run for about a month.
Compensation
All designers will receive a $575 stipend for their work, to be paid out at strike.
