Ice Cream Days (dairy free & vegan)

It’s hot, sunny and totally summer in Maine. I grew up spending many summer nights with my family slurping up sweet, sticky ice cream. This summer we are making many batches of ice cream at the Museum & Theatre, and I want to share a special recipe that will be perfect to make at home to satisfy most any picky eater and all who love cool summer treats.

This recipe makes approximately 6-8 scoops of ice cream.

Before we begin, this recipe calls for a little prepping. First, you’ll want to take 4 ripe bananas, peel them, slice them, and let them freezer overnight. This will be the base of your delicious homemade ice cream!

Now that your sliced bananas are frozen and ready to go, it’s time to begin blending up this sweet and healthy treat!

[YOUR recipe name here] (Every batch is different. Get creative and name this recipe!)

  • Blend up 4 ripe bananas sliced and frozen till they are a smooth consistency. You can use a blender or food processor for this step.

  • Next, blend in 2 ½  tablespoons cocoa and a splash of almond milk till your cocoa is fully mixed in with frozen bananas.

If you’d like a scoop that’s a little bit more sweet, mix in a splash of maple syrup or vanilla. We wouldn’t be a Maine organization without recommending some delicious maple syrup in your ice cream now would we?

Now it’s time to make this recipe your own! Depending on your what you and your little chef’s taste buds are craving, go ahead and…

  • mix in some chocolate chips, peanut butter, mini-marshmallows, graham cracker crumbs, candy bits, or any other ice cream topping you can think of! Think BIG ice cream makers—what wonderful, creative combinations of flavors can you come up with?

  • Pour out your blended mixture in a container of your choosing, let freeze for 1 hour, and viola! Enjoy your dairy free and vegan homemade ice cream!

What name do you pick for your super-duper ice cream creation? Finally, what special person can you share it with?

Note: if you don’t have a blender or a food processor or your just up for a kitchen adventure make this ice cream recipe into an engineering challenge and work with your child to see what kitchen/household tools (such as spoons, rolling pins, meat pounders, forks…etc.) work the best to mash up bananas.

Happy ice cream making!
